The fashion industry has over the years been responsible as the biggest contribution of waste to the environment. Yet within all this tumultuousness of an environment synthetic-fabrics are still favored over eco-friendly fabrics. Sperm whales washing up the shore with piles of trash inside the stomach, a diver filming himself in Bali covered with stretches of plastic. Yet the seriousness of the situation is handled less serious than it should be.
Man-made synthetic fibres are a huge addition to the already existing catastrophe. Fibres from materials such as polyester are making their way from the washing machines into the aquatic world. Mainly because synthetic fibres are cheaper and easier to produce. When they are in fact adding an overwhelming amount of chemical waste and carbon emissions. Not to mention the exploitation of human labour. Because manufacturing of synthetic fibres take place in areas where the labour force is cheap. Countries such as Bangladesh, Indonesia, China being the biggest contributors.
ECO-FRIENDLY FABRICS TO INVEST
The real question is not how to make our way out of it but how to better it. Starting off with eco-friendly fabrics are the most likely good start. Because eco-friendly fabrics are grown in controlled settings with no pesticides, herbicides or other chemicals. The issue of using leather and fur is already a much heated dispute, prompting fashion industries the idea of eco-friendly fabrics will be a start. These are hence some of the eco-friendly fabrics you can start off with;
Organic cotton-Apart from being a huge heat absorbent, organic cotton re soft, smells clean and are less likely to trigger allergies. Their main bonus as an eco-friendly comes with the fact that they do not pollute groundwater, surface water, soil or air.
Bamboo- One of the fastest growing plant, bamboo makes an excellent choice for eco-friendly fabrics. They are one of nature’s most sustainable resource. They can be spun into yarns with no chemical modifications, they are at the same time naturally anti-microbial, hypoallergenic and thermal regulating.
Hemp-hemp your hem! Hemp plants like bamboo grows quickly but does not exhaust the soil instead enables sustainability by leaving the soil in excellent condition. They are an extremely durable fabric, very insulating, absorbent and only improves over time.
Ramie- These eco-friendly fabrics are strong, durable and a highly eco-friendly fibre. They are naturally resistant to bacteria and do not require pesticides or herbicides. Definitely a nature’s miracle.
Let us not add salt to the already exiting habitat wound. Go eco-friendly!
